I hate (d) our upstairs bathroom.

Like a lot.

Like so much I don't even have a picture to show you. That bad.

I rationlized it with using the "It's a kids bathroom" excuse, who cares what it looks like. I can't even say I've been dealing with it for forever, it had been less then a year when I decided to take this project on.

Fake tile wall.

I don't even know what kind of floor.

And one of those lovely 80's shower doors that's brassy gold and then has that stuff on the door to give you privacy?

Yeah. Kids bathroom or not, it was not cool.

But bathroom makeovers are expensive. So, I took to pinterest to see if anyone else had tackled this issues. And guess what. I was not alone!

With that said, while I did all the hard work here, I can't take credit for the idea of painting tile board, or the striped design I went with. It was all thanks to this post. I will take credit for the man power, and decorating, and stuff like that though.

The first step was clearning out the room (duh!).

The next step could be either taking the floor out or spray painting the metal of the shower door. I went for instant gratification and spray painted the shower door first. It wasn't 100% perfect, but it was 100% better than the brass before, and it actually made the privacty strips look not so awful.

Once that was done, I took to the floor. What an easy peasy mac and cheesy project that was.

Like I said, I have no idea what type of floor it was? Maybe a vinyl sheet? laminate? I dunno, but it was old and gross. After a few attempts at pulling things up, I found that if I made some cuts with a razor, then heated the floor up with my hairdryer, it softened it up enough for me to pull it up. It was tediuous, but gratifying.

Once the floor was up it was time to get my paint on. Or rather my tape on..

Actually scrap that.

Look. At. This. Disaster.

Whoever installed the vinly/laminate/gross sheet flooring decided the caulking near teh shower was completely unecessary. And after many years of use, this was the floor underneath.

I let it dry out for a few days, and even wiped it down with some bleach, just in case. Then when it was dry I used wood filler (it was more like wood cement or something) to fix it all up. I wish I had taken pics. I filled those holes up and then sanded it so it was level with the rest of the floor. And you better bet your butt i put caulking all around that once the new floor was down.

But back to paint.

Being the frugal (stop laughing Kelly!) person I am, I decided to use paint we already had. Grey Horse, which we used in Jackson's room, and Linen which I had used in the dining room.

Because this is tile board with "grout" i was able to count how many tiles each color would be. So my first step was painting that with the linen paint. I didn't bother taping yet since I already had a straight line to work with. I did paint a little bit over the grout line just to be safe. I let it dry, painted another coat, then waited a day or so before I started taping things out for the grey.

Once that was done it was time to paint the grey color. More drying...a little extra drying since I've been impatient before and had taken tape off too soon and my project was ruined. When I toook the tape off, viola!! No more ugly tile board!!

When next I visit you (hopefully sooner than three months) we'll talk flooring and finishing touches :)
